Delhi, Jaipur and Agra: three of the most fascinating cities in the whole of the Indian sub-continent and the very heart of the Mughal Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries. This tour provides a gentle but fascinating introduction to a culture and civilization that will leave you feeling as though you have only just scratched the surface, beneath which lies something beautiful and mystical waiting to be discovered.
Monday (Day 1)
In the afternoon we take a flight to Delhi. Upon arrival, we are transferred to our hotel in Delhi, for overnight stay at Hotel Marriott or similar.
Tuesday ( Day 2)
Morning departure by coach to Jaipur. After checking-in at the hotel in Jaipur, we begin our afternoon tour of this fascinating city, the capital of the desert state of Rajasthan, by driving past the City Palace, a delightful blend of Mughal and traditional Rajasthani architecture and a former royal residence. It sprawls over 1/7 of the area in the walled city and now houses the City Palace Museum. The tour continues to Jantar Mantar, a 17th century observatory and a stop for photography at the "Palace of the Winds", whose ornamental facade is a landmark in Jaipur. The pink sandstone structure is encrusted with fine trellis work and balconies and has niches and windows. Overnight in Jaipur at Hotel Rajputana Sheraton or similar.
Wednesday (Day 3) - Amber Fort
This morning is the highlight of the visit to Jaipur with a tour of the Amber Fort. A classic romantic Rajasthan fort palace. For a truly royal experience an elephant ride through the snaking pathway up to the palace entrance is included. Overnight in Jaipur.
Thursday (Day 4)
Early morning departure by road to Agra visiting Fatehpur Sikri ('deserted city') en route. Fatehpur Sikri is a perfectly preserved example of a Mughal city. The main entrance to the city is through the 175 feet Buland Darwaza, the highest gate in the word.
After checking-in at our hotel we begin the afternoon tour, visiting Agra Fort made by Akbar during his reign. It was also used by his son Jehangir as the seat of power. We continue on to the local bazaar and that famous labour of love, the Taj Mahal, which has been awing visitors from around the world over the ages. Overnight in Agra at Mughal Sheraton or similar.
Friday (Day 5)
Early morning departure by road to Delhi, the capital of India. Afternoon sightseeing tour of Old Delhi which was one of the capitals of Muslim India between the 12th and 13th centuries. Its bustling roads and lanes are full of history, interesting monuments, mosques and forts. We pass the commanding Red Fort extending for over 2km and modeled on the Agra Fort by Shah Jahan. The tour also includes a visit to the colourful Chandnl Chowk bazaar and the largest mosque in India and the final architectural extravagance of Shah Jahan. Overnight in Delhi at Hotel Marriott or similar.
Saturday (Day 6)
Early morning departure for your flight back to Goa.
